The Appalachian Forest Discovery Center is a museum and visitor center featuring forest heritage – the interaction between people and the forest. The museum explores Forest History, Forest Culture, the Natural Forest, and Forestry – the four theme topics of Appalachian Forest Heritage Area. A new exhibit each year explores one of the topics in more depth. The museum is located in the Darden Mill, Railroad Ave and First St, in downtown Elkins. It is generally open to the public Thursday through Sunday, from May through October.
The Appalachian Forest Heritage Area (AFHA) is a regional, grassroots effort to integrate central Appalachian forest history, culture, natural history, products, and forestry management into a heritage tourism initiative to promote rural community development. AFHA sponsors an AmeriCorps program, in which AFHA AmeriCorps members work with local partner organizations on environmental stewardship, community development, heritage tourism development, and hands-on historic preservation.
