The Upshur County Historical Society was organized in 1926 and serves as the county level organization dedicated to the identification, preservation, and perpetuation of all things historical pertaining to the county. The society’s mission is accomplished through its three facilities: the History Center Museum, Document Repository, and the historic former French Creek Presbyterian Church Building (all National Register properties). Preserving, publishing, programming, and providing a county document/artifact repository/research center and museum are the avenues through which this society fulfills its mission. The organization is a private, not for profit, 501 (c) 3 , mostly volunteer, body that maintains its operations through an aggressive membership and gift development program and does not receive city, county, or state funding excepting on occasional projects. The collection contains more than 50,000 documents/artifacts/and research materials (with in-progress digital cataloguing of all holdings). The society offers more than 30 publications about Upshur County for purchasing at its facilities and online. It also publishes a professionally researched and circulated annual Journal to its members and the general public.
It’s summer 2018 exhibit is “From Whence They Came: Group Migrations into Present Day Upshur County”
The museum is open seasonally, June – Sept, Sun 1:00p to 4:00p; UCHS document repository and research center open year round on Tuesday evenings, 6-8pm or by appointment
