Social Media & Clio for Museums
February 17 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
On February 17, 2018, 9:00am-3:00pm, those interested in learning how to promote their organization online are invited to attend a hands-on workshop at WVU Jackson’s Mill Farmstead on social media usage and Clio. Attendees are strongly encouraged to bring a computer to work alongside leaders Sydney and Pamela! The workshop is part of West Virginia Association of Museums’ 2018 Educational Workshop Series and is in partnership with WVU Jackson’s Mill Farmstead and Clio.
Workshop leaders Sydney Stapleton and Pamela Curtin will lead participants in understanding social media and its use in the museum field as well as creating and editing Clio entries and walking tours! The morning session, led by Sydney, will focus on utilizing Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and websites to promote your organization and its events. The afternoon session, led by Pamela, will focus on Clio, which is a completely free website and app that provides “useful information about a historical site, museum, monument, landmark, or other site of cultural or historical significance” in your area.
Both Sydney Stapleton and Pamela Curtin are Preserve WV AmeriCorps members. Sydney Stapleton is in her second year of service with the Harrison County Historical Society. With a background in anthropology, archaeology, history, and museum studies from Ohio University, Sydney has experience in historic preservation, collection management, and social media. Pamela serves with Clio, editing and reviewing entries and walking tours as well as creating her own. With a Master’s in Public History and a certificate in Cultural Resource Management from WVU, she also has experience in a wide variety of subjects including English, environmental education, and museum and exhibit design.
The West Virginia Association of Museums was founded in 1990. The mission of the organization has been to serve, educate, advocate for, and enhance communications within the museum community. WVAM is pleased to partner with WVU Jackson’s Mill Farmstead and Clio to host this event.
For WVAM members, cost to attend is $10; non-member is $20. Lunch is included. Registration is required.
