Join WVAM as we build our museum community and take over Charleston! Communities are ever expanding entities; people come and go, interests change over time, and new ideas and time-tested tactics must come into play to both maintain and build relationships. By strengthening our community ties, whether within our organization, county, state, or nationally, we can better serve as stewards and advocates for culture, science, and history.

“Celebrate West Virginia” is a weekend-long celebration of West Virginia Day! A kickoff celebration, held Thursday June 22 from 4-7 PM at Spark! Imagination and Science Center, will feature live music and food. Representatives from museums and historic sites in the community will present family-friendly activities and information about their organization.
Throughout the weekend, area museums and historic sites will have special, family-friendly events (all of which will be free). Participating organizations are Spark! Imagination and Science Center, Royce J. and Caroline B. Watts Museum, Art Museum of WVU, West Virginia Botanic Garden, Old Hemlock Foundation, Monongalia Historical Society, WVU Libraries/West Virginia & Regional History Center, and Arthurdale Heritage, Inc.

Guests for this day are treated to the mouthwatering down home cooking of Adaland’s long time cook, Lucy Williamson. The buffet table will be laden with two entrees, a collection of sides, salad with Lucy’s famous dressing, homemade bread, and a sideboard of luscious desserts. Adaland’s signature peach iced tea and coffee round out the afternoon meal that has become a favorite of many visitors. Adults $20.00 plus tip. Children $10.00 plus tip. Reservations are required and limited to 10 per caller. Reservations for six or more must be paid in advance. Credit card, check or cash accepted with 10% house gratuity.

To honor the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Senator Robert C. Byrd in 2017, the Robert C. Byrd Center for Congressional History & Education has designed a major traveling exhibit, “Robert C. Byrd: Senator, Statesman, West Virginian.” The exhibit features digital representations of more than 100 documents and photographs from the extensive Robert C. Byrd Congressional Papers Collection.
The Harrison County Historical Society and the Auxilary UHC will be partnering on the showing of the exhibit here in Harrison County from
April 12th – May 15th on the first floor of at the United Hospital Center.
